Berlin Kunstprojekt
is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Charles Hecht.

Under the title "AMERICA" the artist Charles Hecht shows in his first soloshow at the Berliner Kunstprojekt his sculpture series also known as "Hannah´s Flags". It is a series of Flag sculptures made of metal and glass related to the flag of the United States of America. The idea for this series came from a school project for his nine-year-old granddaughter, Hannah, teaching children what each of the elements of United States flag represents: Red symbolizes hardiness and valor. White symbolizes purity and innocence. The surface of the metal was ground so that the purity and innocence of the steel would show through. Blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. Instead of painted stars, now representing each of the 50 states are blue and white or red, white and blue marbles. For the exhibition at the Berliner Kunstprojekt Charles Hecht wanted to pattern the grouping after Kuba cloth, which is a special type of weaving by an African tribe. "What makes Kuba cloth unique is that the various patterns within the whole design look identical from a distance; however, when you carefully look at the design each individual pattern varies slightly from all of other patterns on the cloth. The more you look at a Kuba cloth, the more you realize these subtle differences. With that in mind, each of the flags in this grouping have subtle differences. First, the wind blows at different angles for each flag. Second, I have varied the type of marbles used for each flag as to both size and color. Third, there are slight variations in the blues and the reds. Fourth, there are slight differences in how I finished each flag before the dye and special polymer was put on the flag. So, now each flag is a unique piece but it is part of the overall unifying theme."
