THE HANNAH'S FLAG SERIES

The idea for this series came from a school project for my nine-year-old granddaughter, Hannah. The project taught children what each of the elements of United States flag represents. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor. White symbolizes purity and innocence. The surface of the steel was ground so that the purity and innocence of the steel would show through. Blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. Instead of painted stars, now representing each of the 50 states are blue and white or red, white and blue marbles. For this part of the sculpture Hannah works with me to insert, with epoxy, each of the marbles in a proper position in the pre-drilled depressions. We named it Hannah's Flag. To celebrate the completion of each of the sculptures we go to local pastisserie. When we come back, the epoxy has dried and the flag is then ready for hanging on a wall. This flag has been forged so that you can see and feel the wind making the flag wave in the breeze. To highlight this movement, the flag has been structured so that when it hangs on the wall it is approximately 3 to 4 inches away from wall. It has a shiny finish. All of this series were done in 2002 and 2003. One sculpture is currently on display at the Fine Arts Gallery of Bronxville. I'm presently starting a much larger version.

Hannah's Flag I is done with blue and white marbles and is 13 " by 22" with the depth of 3" to 4". It weighs approximately 12 lbs. Hannah's Flag II is done with red, white and blue marbles. It is the same size and weight. However, it was forged so that the wind is coming from a slightly different angle.

Hannah's Flag III was done with white and blue marbles and is the same size and weight. However, it was forged so that the wind is coming from yet another angle.
